Eike Nagel is DZHK Professor for Cardiology and director of the DZHK Centre for Cardiovascular Imaging in Frankfurt. He is one of the founding members and Past President of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR), lead of the Institute for Experimental and Translational Cardiovascular Imaging and the Interdisciplinary Cardiovascular Imaging Service and Consultant Cardiologist in the Departments of Cardiology and Radiology at the University Hospital Frankfurt am Main.

Research focus

Prof. Nagel is dedicated to translational clinical research of cardiovascular imaging biomarkers, aiming at generating a better understanding of the underlying pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases. His research focuses on developing, validating and translating new diagnostic procedures into clinical routine, especially in the field of coronary heart disease, cardiomyopathy and heart failure (HF-REF, H-PEF).

Prof. Nagel has successfully established and translated several CMR applications and imaging techniques into clinical practice.  His scientific achievements include the establishment of new methods for assessing the presence of myocardial ischemia by MRI, including stress myocardial perfusion using adenosine and regadenoson, as well as wall motion abnormality imaging by dobutamine (DSMR). Currently, Prof. Nagel investigates novel imaging parameters based on CMR for the characterization and classification of patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) as well as establishing predictive associations for myocardial fingerprinting with the outcome to investigate the biomarker qualification pathway of these fingerprints in the characterization of diffuse myocardial disease.

Prof. Nagel has a longstanding history of research, teaching, and training in cardiovascular magnetic resonance. He has published over 500 imaging-related publications and has authored several clinical guidelines, for example on standardized image acquisition, standardized reporting and standardized quantification for cardiovascular magnetic resonance as well as diagnostic pathways for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

The Institute for Experimental and Translational Cardiovascular Imaging offers state-of-the-art clinical service as well as a wide range of courses and fellowships on CMR for clinicians, radiographers, CMR physicists, and engineers, aspiring to outline the role of CMR in diagnosis and clinical management of heart diseases.
