One in twenty people survive a life-threatening rhythm abnormality (cardiac arrest) without a clear explanation. Future treatment is limited and there may be undetected risk for their relatives. We will study the largest group of these survivors ever collected to better understand their genetics and underlying causes of their unexplained cardiac arrest. We will then test new genetic discoveries in genetically altered human cells and mice to find targets for new medicines. The electrical behaviour of these patients hearts will also be studied using 24-hour heart monitors. We aim to improve theirs and their relatives treatment and prevent sudden death.
