Already in his early research years, he demonstrated that the activation of brown adipose tissue could significantly reduce harmful blood lipids and sugars. Since then he revealed new intracellular mechanisms that control the function and activity of brown adipose tissue.
It is for this groundbreaking work that Dr. Bartelt was awarded this year's Friedmund Neumann Prize. The € 10,000 Prize from the Ernst Schering Foundation is attributed to young scientists who already developed an individual academic profile while conducting outstanding work in human biological, organic/chemical or human medical/basic research. The award aims to promote excellent scientific achievements and support scientific establishment.

Dr. Alexander Bartelt is junior group leader at the Institute for Prophylaxis and Epidemiology of Cardiovascular Diseases (IPEK), LMU. He is also head of a new junior research group at the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK).
