"The new research building will once again increase the visibility of the community medicine," Professor Henry Völzke from the Institute of Community Medicine told the news agency dpa. Völzke is a Principal Investigator at the DZHK. Community Medicine, or population research, is one of five focus areas at Greifswald University Medical Centre and combines, among other things, demographic and medical issues.
The Science Council recently recommended the construction of the new research building. The final decision is expected this summer. The costs of 65.6 million euros are covered by the federal government and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Under the roof of the future "William B. Kannel Center for Community Medicine", about 380 scientists will work on transferring scientific findings into the clinic, the health system, and society. The research focuses on preventing widespread diseases such as diabetes mellitus or cardiovascular diseases and improving the health care of the population in everyday life. The foundation for this is basic epidemiological research.
