"Heart and brain together in focus" is the title of the public lecture series of the University of Göttingen and the Lower Saxony Academy of Sciences in Göttingen in the winter semester 2023/2024. In the series, scientists from the Göttingen Cluster of Excellence "Multiscale Bioimaging: from molecular machines to networks of excitable cells" (MBExC) will give comprehensive insights into the Cluster's unique research approach using their research results as examples.

They present innovative technologies that often originate from pioneering work in Göttingen and are being further developed at the MBExC, and show how precisely we can now "look inside" tissue and cells - all of these technologies provide unique insights into our heart and brain. The lectures will take place from 7 November 2023 on Tuesdays at 6.15 pm in the auditorium at Wilhelmsplatz.

DZHK scientists are also among the speakers:

Prof. Dr. André Fischer on the topic of "Epigenetics and health: how we can influence our genes!" (21.11.2023)

Prof. Dr. Wolfram Hubertus-Zimmermann on the topic of "Heart patches: aid for a weak heart" (05.12.2023)

Prof. Dr. Tim Salditt on the topic of "X-ray view of the heart and brain: three-dimensional representation of cytoarchitecture" (09.01.2024)

Prof. Dr. Nils Voigt on the topic of "Heartquakes - when the heart gets out of sync..." (23.01.2024)

Prof. Dr. Jan Huisken on the topic "A flamingo goes on a journey: Deciphering biological development processes with the light sheet microscope" (06/02/2024)

Diseases of the heart and brain are among the most common causes of death worldwide. Some diseases even affect both organs. Although the heart and brain appear very different at first glance, their main electrically excitable cells have many things in common. Both utilise similar functional units that serve to excite the cells and through which they provide physiological services as part of active networks. Malfunctions of these nanometre-sized units often lead to diseases. The aim of the Göttingen Cluster of Excellence is to understand these functional units of heart and nerve cells in order to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches and answer socially relevant questions in heart and brain research.

MBExC speaker Prof. Dr Tobias Moser, Director of the Institute of Auditory Neuroscience at the University Medical Centre Göttingen (UMG), will kick off the event on 7 November. He will talk about "How hearing works and can be restored in the future". The following week, chemist Prof Dr Claudia Steinem will shed light on the role of calcium for the heart and brain. Other lectures will focus on topics including the "heart patch", research into the egg cell, epigenetics and health, microscopy technologies and learning in living networks.

The lecture series is once again supported by the Universitätsbund Göttingen e.V.. The recordings of the lectures will be broadcast one week later on Wednesday at 12 noon on StadtRadio Göttingen (107.1 MHz). They will also be available long-term as a video recording on the University's YouTube channel and as an audio file.
