This year, 6,938 people from 69 countries made it into the ranking. With 369 researchers, Germany is in fourth place in the country comparison, after the USA, China and the United Kingdom. For the ranking, Clarivate surveyed how frequently scientific articles published between January 2011 and December 2021 were cited by peers. Articles are considered frequently cited if they are among the top one percent of most cited publications in their field in their year of publication.

The evaluation included scientific articles from journals covered by the Web of Science™ citation database from the Web of Science Core Collection, which currently contains over 21,000 international journals.
To address the increasing concern about possible scientific misconduct such as plagiarism, image manipulation or falsified peer reviews, Clarivate paid increased attention to such references and excluded researchers from the list where appropriate.
